Subject: sequel to what i tried to learn after age 45
dear diary,

this is a sequel to my diary entry about the things i tried to learn after age
45...particularly that part dealing with my effort to learn how to write songs
which i started in 1989 with the help of my dear friend ka art p. madulid of
penaranda, nueva ecija... the question is whether or not i have a talent or gift
for writing songs just because i learned to write simple melodies and the lyrics
to go with them....

as for talent, that is what i really don't have... because if i had talent, i
would have been writing songs since way back, not when i was already is 47 years
old...i was that old in 1989... that's what i've trying to say all along...
everyone thinks i have the talent just because i have written over 50 songs in the past, and
i have written about 4 songs about my hometown and province of romblon just this
year alone, and a song for the gaward alumni for the romblon high school
facebook....

of course, i deeply appreciate the congratulatory comments i get from friends in
facebook with respect to some of the lyrics i post there... but again, i
always have to take exception to suggestions that i have a gift for it, for the
simple truth is that i don't have a gift for writing songs... like i said, if i
had it, i would have been writing songs since before i was 47 years old... i
could not even write a poem when i was in school although i really tried...

if not for ka art p. madulid of penaranda, nueva ecija, i would never have
learned to write songs...and though what i've written may never be accepted as
remarkable by others, i am happy to know that although i have no gift for
music, i still have managed to learn before it was too late how to write songs...

this is the lesson that i wish others to see from my experience... this is
actually what i expect... that others might appreciate the lyrics of my songs
in the light of this truth... and not that others might think that the said
lyrics have come naturally as a matter of gift...

i just hope that others will look at my lyrics in this context, so they wll begin perhaps to read them line by
line and ponder, even wonder, how in the world i was able to put these lines together...and really appreciate why i am keen on sharing them with anyone....and i hope that in the end may come to an honest conclusion whether or not my lyrics are worth a grain of salt...

or that maybe, they will begin to look into whether my lyrics can bring joy, happiness,
upliftment or encouragement, or inspiration to anyone, or whether they can foster goodwill, love, fidelity, and such other desirable moral, social and cultural values...

like in the case of my christmas songs, i hope others will see if the lyrics can contribute to making christmas a little bit more meaningful...not only for themselves and their loved ones, but more importantly for others who are less fortunate in life....

and in the case of my love songs, will the lyrics contribute to making marriages work for the good of the family... or promote the moral values of love, fidelity or mutual help and respect...

and in the case of my songs about romblon, will the lyrics help promote tourism in the place, or even bring a little knowledge of the place to those not from there... or inspire students of the romblon high, or any other school for that matter, to aspire to do good for themselves, their families, and their fellowmen....

in short, i wish others to see if there is any lesson at all to be learned from the lyrics of my songs....

that is why when junix sent us via fbook a video of addie singing on stage with
jun accompanying her on the piano or keyboard in a talen show, i really took
pains in looking at the vide so i could give an honest appraisal of how addie
performed on stage... much as i wanted to just say congratulations, great
job, or other phrases of praise, i explained how addie rated in terms of stage
presence, audience contact, control of her performance, and of whether she
showed any sign of nervousness or stage fright...of course, in addition to how
her voice sounded and how her timing was....and as to whether or not she
actually enjoyed what she was doing...

i said i owed it to addie to do this because she volunteered to go on stage to
participate in this talent show on her own....and therefore, i could do not
less...

why, when i share the lyrics of my songs with anyone, i share with them a part
of myself, my thoughts, my feelings... my sentiments, and most especially my
experience...in order that others may see if they serve any good purpose at all, other than mainly as a source of entertainment...and on thanksgiving day, i should really be grateful that i have been given the opportunity to do this...and to be able to do it in honor of my parents, the late spouses, Salvador B. Acejas,Sr. and Florentina J. Acejas, is definitely something very special that i ought to be grateful for...
