dear carolynn,

i am an uncle of yours, being a first cousin of your mother, her mother
being the oldest sister of my mother. i wrote your mother an email
congratulating everyone but most especially ( or is it specially?) you
for having succesfully passed your bar exams. (i hate to admit this but
it wrote the email in tagalog because i have difficulty writing in
english particularly about grammar and spelling.) in addition, i
requested your mom to greet you a happy birthday (november 9) in behalf
of all of us here in riverdale, georgia. and since she mentioned
something like your passing the bar was such a nice anniversary gift so
i also wished her a very happy anniversary, telling her that indeed this
was such a very nice anniversary gift. then i reminded her that perhaps
this time you would be kind enough to send me a copy of your graduation
picture with your autograph which i had requested from her when she told
me about your law school graduation. then i said it would be a such a
big bonus if in addition you could send me an autographed picture of
your oath- taking as a full-fledged lawyer. i told your mother that of
course i am also proud to have a niece (pamangkin) who is a lawyer here
in the united states. ( i have two nephews who are lawyers in the
philippines.) then i asked her what line of practice you will specialize
in or in what state you will practice. and also i was curious if you had
any plans of taking a masters degree in law from harvard or yale. in
closing, i said once again congratulations and more power to you and we
wish you all the best.

the above is supposed to be a translation of my attached letter to your
mom. it only took me a few minutes to write said letter and it took me
more time to do the translation because seriously i had to check the
dictionary for my spelling as i went along. but i hope this would serve
as your first lesson in tagalog so that when i write again i wouldn't
have to do two versions of one and the same letter. hope to hear from
you soon.

congratulations to all of you, lalo na kay carolynn for her passing the
bar exam. at saka paki bati naman siya ng happy birthday mula sa aming
lahat dito. at saka may nabanggit kang anniversary, kaya happy
anniversary din sa inyo. talaga namang napakagandang anniversary gift
ito para sa inyo. siguro naman, mapapadalahan na ako ni carolynn noong
graduation picture na nerequest ko noon na may autograph niya. o dili
kaya, samahan pa niya ito noong oath-taking picture niya bilang isang
ganap na abogada. syempre, proud din ako na may pamangkin din akong
abogada dito sa us of a. syanga pala, ano ba ang balak niyang maging
linya niya bilang abogada. at saan state siya magpapractice. o baka may
balak pa siyang magmaster of law sa harvard o yale. anyway, sa uulitin,
congratulations kay carolynn at more power to her. at saka we wish her
all the best.
